Top 10 Egg Based Breakfasts

This morning I consumed a disappointing fried egg sandwich and had to re-evaluate my preferences towards egg based breakfast food stuffs. A heated debate ensued on twitter.

So after much deliberation, debate and a half hearted attempt to search the google box I decided there wasn’t a definitive Top 10 Eggy Breakfasts anywhere to be found, and that a productive way to fill my day would be to post one here. Also, it would prove to @grahamburglar that I had given the matter serious thought and wasn’t half heartedly throwing breakfast egg suggestions into the twitter machine.

Here goes…

1. POACHED EGGS

The king of eggs in my eyes. A skill to master and can be served with anything. Favourites include; Toast (Obvz), Fishes – Salmon, Kippers, Mackerel etc. etc., and Corn Beef Hash, although you probably wouldn’t have that for breakfast but no-one would judge you if you did.

2. SCRAMBLED EGGS

Classics are the best, and they’re a piece of piss to make. My favourite hangover food, or basic meal when you’re brain cogs won’t work.

I say they’re easy to make, although a certain @reel_jen rang me for the recipe for Scrambled Eggs the other day. Me: “Seriously?” Reel_Jen: “Yeah so is it two parts milk to one part egg.”

3. EGGS FLORENTINE

I LOVE SPINACH. So any excuse to eat spinach at meal times is a good one. There’s some debate over which is better Eggs Florentine or Eggs Benedict. You’re probably a boy if you prefer Benedict. What with it having meat in it. (Trufax taken from Twitter poll).

4. CHUCKY EGG

No not the 1983 classic computer game. Although I’m pretty sure through out the 80s I will have often eaten a Chucky Egg whilst playing Chuckie Egg.

In case you didn’t know, a Chucky Egg is a boiled egg, mashed up in a cup with bread and butter and salt and pepper. Must be consumed with a tea spoon, super fast, as after about your third mouthful it’ll be cold already. Taste sensation and will make you feel like you’re 5 again.

5. EGGY BREAD

Another childhood fav. Bread, Egg, Frying Pan. Must be consumed with Brown Sauce. Super health.

6. SOFT BOILED EGG WITH SOLDIERS

Not much to say really. They’re a winner and fun to eat.

7. FRIED EGG SANDWICH

The biggest debate of all. I may have lost a friend over this as @sazwot is the biggest Fried Egg Sandwich fan of all time, and I’ve royally pissed her off putting it at number 7. I’ve just decided that there are far more superior egg based food stuffs for the morning than the humble fried egg. Redeeming factors – pretty quick to make and always needs fluffy white bread and real butter. Oh, and put a sausage in it and you can skip 3 more places to the top.

8. BAKED EGGS FLAMENCO

I had this at Lunya in Liverpool One. They describe it as “The prettiest breakfast ever. Two eggs, baked in a cazuela with a sofrito (tomato and onion) sauce seasonal vegetables, Serrano ham and chorizo”. It was pretty good, so it goes in the list.

9. EGGS BENEDICT

Ok, I like meat too. But not as much as Spinach. So Benedict comes in at number 9.

10. FULL ENGLISH WITH ALL THE EGGS

Technically, egg does not make up the base of a Full English, but this Breakfast staple couldn’t be missed off so I suggest you put all egg combinations on for a fuller eggy experience.

The Buzz Launch

October kick started with The Buzz launching their new magazine to a packed out Bijou. (I think it was packed, I spent most of the evening in the super fun photo booth). The dinky handbag sized magazine potentially could do very well, targeting fashion savvy women in Manchester. Let’s hope they get their distribution right, as so many Manchester magazines have tried and failed in recent years.

Beaver of Bolton

Beaver most definitely deserves its own post which will follow shortly. Suffice to say, we popped over to this hidden gem in Bolton and were amazed by the beautiful tweed tailoring. Gentleman hunting gear is definitely going to get even more popular over the coming seasons.

Show Me You’re Funny

Our favourite ‘find’ of the month. SMYF is a twice monthly comedy night held on Friday evenings in the Town Hall Tavern. An array of comedians try their stand up acts out in front of an intimate room of approx 30-40 people. Massively good fun, the night is free and you very much get the good, the bad and the ugly.

Mrs Boons Tea Party

Fresh cakes, acoustic sets, free tea, and loads of small children running around. You never know who you’re going to be listening to at Mrs Boons Tea Party, but for a measly £3 you’re guaranteed a good afternoon out. Rumour has it Ian Brown is set to make an appearance. We ventured down when Franz Ferdinand played, video above.

Once again another brilliant night was had at Cutloose Club with the tasty Brennan Green. Next up is Robert Johnson and RBMA resident Gerd Janson.

Manchester Blog Awards

I went down to check what the Manchester Blog Awards were all about and unfortunately was rather dissappointed. Categories consist of Best City and Neighbourhood Blog, Best Personal Blog, Best New Blog, Best Writing Blog, Best Arts and Culture Blog, and Blog of the Year. All potentially good categories, unfortunately due to them being ruled by the Manchester Literature Festival there is a definite pattern to those considered. Where is the Best Political Blog Award? Business Blog Award? Food, Drink, Digital, Fashion, News, etc .etc. Blog Awards?? I would like to see more variation on who stands a chance, which in turn might create more diversity to attendees. There are so many interesting people out there talking about this great city from very different angles.

That said, we had a very entertaining night with Bloggerpalooza providing musical treats, which sadly largely fell on deaf ears. I’m not really into controversial ranty posts because there are too many good positive things to talk about out there, which is why I won’t delve any further into the Blog Awards or the closely comparable Social Media Cafe for that matter. Apart from to say please stop putting that rude remarkably unfunny host on the stage. *Note to smc_mcr: Brief your guest speakers. Don’t publicly hurry them to finish their presentations* FAIL

Jimmy Choo for H&M

Warehouse Project is going strong this year with the majority of nights all selling out well in advance. A large majority of people I know in Manchester made it down for the ‘Curated by Friendly Fires’ evening, not that I saw any of them, it was so busy. I slinked off to dance with about 7 other people to Horse Meat Disco while the majority battled it out in the main room trying to catch a glimse of the Friendly Fires live set. Sadly I missed Prins Thomas because I had to go home and grab some sleep before Sample Sale the next day.

On the way home though I managed to stay standing long enough to grab this photo for the queue outside H&M for Jimmy Choo shoes... it was 4am. If you weren’t hard core enough to camp out for some yourself, I believe they’re all on ebay now.

#ElectrikWalkClub

I joined a gym in Manchester once. It cost me £40 a month and I drove to and from it. I was with them for about 6 months and went approximately 10 times over that duration. I’m not brilliant at maths but it doesn’t take a genius to realise what a pointless waste of money that was. I’ve learnt from my mistakes. I now recognize that motivation for me to exercise comes in the form of warm cosy friendly surroundings, real ale, sausage and mash, and tunes resonating from a one deck armchair.

Which is why I’m championing the #electrikwalkclub. What better way to end a brisk 6 mile walk than in the Camra Award winning Electrik Bar. Plan is every Sunday bring a load of people together with the power of twitter and walk from the Northern Quarter to Chorlton. Last Sunday the wonderful Eddy gave us full running commentary on the history of the industrial buildings along the canal. Healthy AND educational , GENIUS. To get onboard, follow @lukeunabomber

Christmas Lights and North Pole Bar

We were stood at a funny angle this year but here’s a pic of the fireworks from last year courtesy of @rebeccawho. Afterwards we all headed over to the new location North Pole Bar. We also popped along to the launch there this week, hot cocktails and skating. Dangerous combo if you ask me, but we’re loving the bar this year. Smaller and cosier with Strada catering drinkers with stone baked pizzas in under 10 minutes, I like the location better too.

North Pole Bar will be open 11am – 11pm daily, from 12th November 2009 until 3rd January 2010

New Flat

Lastly, at the beginning of the month I moved in to my new flat. I am now a homeowner. The first week I moved in I was instantly aware of how wonderfully peaceful and quiet it is compared to the last flat. There were squirrels and magpies every morning, all the neighbours came and said hello, I felt like I was moving into a Disney movie. All I needed was the wildlife to start talking to me and come inside to help me do my unpacking. Sadly, reality bites and I couldn’t tempt the squirrels inside to do my washing up. I do now feel a massive sense of achievement though by decorating the living room by myself, including the shiny “always believe in you soul” wall as featured above. Expect lots of wistful posts, drooling over homewares and furnishings I either can’t afford or don’t really need.

Lots of other things happened and were attended this month but this post is ridiculously long now.

So finally the real excuse for my lack of posts... Twitter has fully consumed my life now. I no longer speak directly to people, instead I tweet at them from my crappy Blackberry (battery now lasts half a day) whilst they are stood right next to me. It’s clearly the future of communication. Whilst away from my computer or in areas of little or no signal, I experience withdrawal symptoms. It’s probably time for therapy.

On a serious note though, it’s well made life even more fun recently – and massively emptied my purse in the process, due to the influx in social excursions it has provided plus all the awesome new and old “real time” friends that I’ve met.

The collections in Renegade Marmalade are so good someone decided to break in and steal them ALL last month. Who can blame anyone for wanting every garment in the shop, which prides itself on offering the people of Manchester something different than your usual high street affair. We’re just not entirely sure what the scally thieves will do with their swag...

“Eeeeyah, I’ll sell you this designer dress for a tenna”. Massive waste of good clothes in our eyes.

UGG Store Launch, Manchester

Popped over to the UGG store launch last week. I wasn’t expecting great things as, short sighted I may be, I figured UGG was a fad not a phenomenon. There’s only so many shades of cream I can get excited about in the same style of sheepskin boot...

However I happily ate my words, and the delicious canapés on offer, as I was hugely impressed with the store. The new ranges were pretty good, the visual merchandising and layout is slick but... the back of the shop is AMAZING. Spacious and clean with a high tech movable library of shoe boxes and my favourite of all – the boot shoot. (I had to resist the urge to slide down it).

Store manager, Kate Brazier, shared my excitement and gave me a guided tour around her lovingly designed store room. Customer service is top priority at the Manchester store, and Kate is keen to have happy staff. The idea behind the genius boot shoot is to save time, and her staffs legs from running up and down the never ending spiral staircase – which is pretty cool in itself.

I feel pretty strongly about customer service so fingers crossed her staff put as much enthusiasm into their knowledge of the product as has gone into the workings of the shop.

MFN Autumn Winter Sparkly Party

As on trend as ever, we organised a sequined embellished party for all our fashionista friends in the North West. Cosmic Disco kindly provided the music for the evening and kept everyone dancing all night long. Guests such as XFM, Rare Fashion, Beck and Hersey, DV8 Mag, magneticNorth, Selfridges, Man Utd, and Photolink were provided with sparkly bangles courtesy of boohoo.com

As you can imagine I was in my element and took the opportunity to wear head to toe sequins – Religion sequined bomber jacket, Traffic People sequined top and big ass sequin knickers (I was feeling brave, thick black tights were worn). Held in the Chapel Street hidden gem - Corridor bar, the bar genius’ dished out Lipstick Jungle cocktails, which I highly recommend and bottles of new ‘lady drink’ Eve.

N.B. I was in the office by 9 am the next day. Win.

Fun and games at the Big Chill this year consisted of a group of 16 of us... like herding (disco) cats some might say but amazing times were had by all. General consensus from the weekend as follows...

Favourite Fashion
Oversized asymmetric shoulder pads sported by Marina of Marina and the Diamonds, and the super synchronized dancers from Chrome Hoof, seen above. Think I’ll be fashioning myself one out of sequins, feathers and maybe a curtain tassel or two.

Favourite Acts

Horse Meat Disco – The album is purchased and winging its way to me from a popular media e-tailer as we speak.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Gus from Synthia and me checked these guys out because their dad used to be his choir master?? Anyone who can DJ dirty synth disco with a silver sequined cardboard box on their head... is my hero. I’ll be forever in awe of the love they put into that set and the shapes they pulled.

Chrome Hoof – Coupled with the silver clad gyrating asymmetric shoulder pads as seen above... we reeled in amazement at the doom metal, disco, acid house sounds... How many members on stage, room for one more?? Did we love it? Yes, yes we did.

Other musical highlights... Lindstrøm (of course)// Greg Wilson (so many classics, so little time)// Todd Terje (sporting a beard and not a tache, lovely all the same)// Metro Area// Creepy afro jazz from The Ex, Getatchew Mekurya and guests// DJ Sandrinho (ch ch ch check this guy out!)

Worst Entertainment
Noel Fielding and everything he did. The man should not be allowed to do improvised comedy and should be forced to stick to what he’s best at – scripted scripted scripted television with his moustachioed side kick.

One to Watch... Lisa Stannard

Manchester is a friendly place, and the other week at the Theo Parrish night I got chatting to a girl who raved about her amazing textile designing friend. Well, I’ve tracked this talent down and sure enough her stuff is gorgeous! Lisa Stannard has just been picked as one of the top 24 Textile Fashion design graduates in the country and word has it she’s in talks with Topshop, New Look and Marks and Spencers. I love the mixture of delicate illustrations, coupled with beautiful watercoloured shading in both vivid brights and understated pinky greys. Definitely one to watch out for...

Me&Yu can Save the Sharks

Me&Yu, Manchester’s quirky independent streetwear label, based in Afflecks, has recently collaborated with a Tokyo charity to protest against shark fin fishing. “No Fin, No Future” is the campaign to raise awareness for the cruelty and over-fishing which is threatening over 100 species of shark to extinction.

PangeaSeed the Tokyo charity responsible for the campaign has been seeking out unique and original clothing labels, artists and designers to create bespoke art works for their booth at the Fuji Rock Festival and for auction at the “No Fin No Future” event in Tokyo.

Seen on the backs of Agyness Deyn, Noel Fielding and Lady Sovereign, Me&Yu has been gaining world-wide recognition, so is a perfect choice.

They’ve created two different designs, the first is a limited edition design with only two made – especially for the auction in Tokyo. The second is available direct through www.meandyu.com with 50% of the sale price going direct to the charity.

Maryport Blues Festival

Much to my best friend Sarah and my Dads delight, I ditched the disco on Sunday, went back to my roots and made my way to Maryport Blues Festival. A bit of a tradition when I was younger, I’ve missed it for about 5 years in a row. Not this year though, no no. I put a full 10 hours in on Sunday afternoon and here are the pictures. So much fun and a bargain at a measly £5 for the day!! I’m definitely not missing it next year. On the fashion front... nothing to report unless you like Henleys T-Shirts... check shirts haven't made it that far North yet!

Unusual for Manchester but the sun was out on Saturday so after our Sample Sale in The Circle Club I couldn’t wait to hit the road up to the Lakes for a weekend of family fun. Any trip away, near or far, deserves a new outfit and lucky for me I always get the pick of the bargains at our sales. This week Oh My Love brought down some gems. An independent designer from Leeds, but originally France, Oh My Love couples fun prints and colours with effortless shapes. I picked up a leopard print tunic dress and proceeded to prance around the club while Harris from Arthouse spun some shopping house tunes. Oh my, I love my job.

On the last Sunday of every month the kind gentlemen of Wood put a jolly on for all all their Familia in Cord Bar. Discouture and a kitten graced their doors for the first Familia last week to check out the kids in their pristine kicks. We loved the Rogue Status Vogue tee and dapper check shirts were in abundance – not likely to die out anytime soon, the 10 Deep one above is slick. My favourite though... the ghetto bling of course.

Manchester in the summer is still a dark and wet place... and for the last week or two delicously but unbearably hot. Thank god for Spinningfields. In a city where finding a relaxing seat in the sun is a tall order, the kind developers have given us open spaces, grass and best of all a big outdoor screen. Every Thursday evening they’re screening films plus sport and music everyday in between. I’ve been there without fail in between the summer down pours sporting my Kangol straw trilby with a glass of vino in hand.

So much has been going on... highlight The MFN Summer Party in Walrus Canteen and Bar where I got to flaunt my super cute Sugarhill Boutique backless dress. Copious amounts of vodka and Schweppes Russchian (so 80s), canapés, and fashionistas from across the North West plus breaking news on the evening of Michael Jacksons death. Eventful to say the least. A big applause to all the girls done up to the nines in very high heels and neon mini dresses* that continuously got showered with beer while The Charlatans played at Haydock Races last night. Discouture loves how cool the catsuit is at the moment. How very disco to don a jumpsuit. Last night at the free Cutloose party with Felix Dickinson there were a couple of perfect examples. The asos floral number and the ethnic River Island all in one – perfect with those colourful bangles. Whatever you call it, the playsuit seems unstoppable at the moment... unfortunately for my purse there’s several bargain ones at our sample sale today including a couple of gems from Religion. Now where are my big ass supportive knickers...

It’s already turning into one of those weekends... so much to do, so little time. Tonight’s top priority will be popping down to the Private View at MMU to see Aliyah and Emily’s Degree Exhibition. We love the nipple tassles and the fab "Long May She Reign" tees they sell at our fashiony affairs. (The next being our Sample Sale tomorrow at the Triangle, 11am – 5pm).

It’s that time of year when we’re obliged to attend every student fashion degree show in the North West. Unfortunately for MMU’s show this Tuesday technology was against me in the form of a dodgy camera and despite the front row seat, I won’t be featuring a comprehensive review of the show. However, being a total magpie... oooh shiny. My heart gave a flutter at the sparkling ensemble Holly Russell sent down the catwalk. Iridescent feathery shoulder pads anyone... yes please! Super super disco and only a teeny tiny bit Brian Blessed circa Flash Gordon 1980.

Break ups are hard… but freaking amazing when they make you lose nearly two stone and thanks to my wonderfully happy Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, things are better than ever. Isn’t it fabulous how inanimate fashion objects can make you feel good. I thought it only right to celebrate my new found figure and the dawn of Discouture with my favourite bag and the delightful sounds of France Joli. Music and fashion therapy at its best.
